Buy shelving sized for game boxes
Most standard board game boxes are about 11.5 inches (29cm) square — deeper than a typical bookshelf. Deep open-cube shelving like IKEA Kallax fits them where a shallow bookshelf won't, and lets you store boxes flat or on their side. Measure your largest box, including deluxe and campaign boxes, before buying any shelving.
Store boxes upright — carefully
Cube shelving sized to box depth saves space, but store boxes vertically only if the insert holds components in place; otherwise gravity dumps everything against one wall of the box and slowly bows the board. Storing flat or adding a fitted insert solves this. Keep heavy boxes low so they don't crush the boxes beneath them.
Storage boxes for the loose stuff
Not everything belongs in its original box. Dedicated storage helps with the overflow.

- A single labeled overflow box — for promos, small expansions, and loose components.

Make the shelf usable
Stored upright, you read spines — but most boxes only print art there. A spine label or a thin strip of tape with the game name turns a wall of identical boxes into a shelf you can scan in seconds. Leave a cube or two empty so adding a game doesn't force a full re-sort.
