Metal coins are the classic first upgrade — the weight changes how a game feels every turn, and they're the upgrade you handle most. Resource-shaped tokens (little wooden or acrylic goods) come next for economy games. The rule of thumb: the more often your hands touch a component, the more an upgrade is worth.

- Deluxe meeples and figures — mostly visual; lowest impact.
Keep upgrades reachable
Better components only help if they're not buried in a pile. Pair an upgrade set with small bits trays so each resource has a home within arm's reach of every player. Trays also speed up setup and teardown, since you lift the whole tray rather than scooping loose tokens.
Check the fit before you buy
Upgraded components are often bigger and heavier than the originals. Oversized metal coins or chunky tokens can stop the box lid closing or overflow the insert — confirm the dimensions against your box first, especially for currency sets thicker than the cardboard they replace.
